On this page we hope to acquaint you with the basics of our university and provide information about our board of directors, where we operate, and the Student Association.
About the University
Sapientia University is a university that meets all international standards. The institution aims to train specialists who, after graduation, are able to meet professional requirements both at home and abroad. Thanks to the support of Hungary, Sapientia has been present among higher education institutions in Romania since 2001. At its campuses in Miercurea Ciuc, Târgu Mureș, Cluj-Napoca and Sfântul Gheorghe, Sapientia University currently has almost 2500 students and 300 teachers and professors. It operates a network of 27 study programmes in Hungarian in economics, trades, humanities, social and natural sciences, and arts.
Institutional structure
The central offices of the University (Rectorate, Economic Directorate and Sapientia Foundation) are located in Cluj-Napoca.

Legal status
In accordance with legal regulations, the University applied for the external evaluation procedure for institutional accreditation on 19 June 2009. During the visit of the committee of 18 experts of the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ARACIS), which took place on 13-16 April 2010, the degree of compliance with the quality criteria and standards was assessed. Due to the favourable opinion, the ARACIS Council proposed the accreditation of Sapientia University on 22 July 2010.
The Parliament, at its session of 28 February 2012, passed the law establishing Sapientia University as an accredited higher education institution. The law entered into force only after its promulgation by the President of Romania on 30 March 2012 and its publication in the Official Gazette.
The adoption of this normative act represents a moment of major importance in the life of the university. With this act it became a fully-fledged higher education institution which is able to organise graduation exams and master and doctoral degree programs, to issue diplomas and certificates, to establish distance learning, and to participate in European cooperation and mobility programs, and which is entitled, according to the law, to funding from the state budget. The establishment of the university by law is also a decisive step in strengthening the Hungarian-language higher education system in Romania.
Bologna Process
The Bologna Process aims to harmonise European higher education. According to the Bologna Declaration, signatory countries become part of the European Higher Education Area.
Interoperability and free movement between higher education systems are just some of the advantages offered by the Bologna Process. More and more people in the European Union want to participate in education or employment abroad. Thanks to the European Credit Transfer System, students are able to choose modern teaching and learning methods anywhere in Europe.
What is a multi-cycle training system?
Connecting to the Single European Higher Education Area offers more choice and thus more time for students to identify their skills.
The first level of training in basic education (Bachelor, BA) is 6-8 semesters. Its main objective is to enable labour market positioning by obtaining a degree. Thus, this basic education emphasises practical training. At the same time, it also provides a suitable basis for further Master's studies.
The second cycle is the Master's (MA), which lasts 2-4 semesters, and pays more attention to theory. The cycle offers the opportunity to not only specialise in a specific field, but to increase one's mastery of several fields.
The Master's degree can be followed by a job placement or to continue one's studies through a third cycle, lasting three years: the doctorate (PhD or DLA), which prepares one for an academic degree.
International relations
Sapientia University has cooperation contracts with the following institutions: University of Debrecen, Budapest Economic College, Corvinus University of Budapest, University of Pécs, Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest, Pázmány Péter Catholic University of Budapest, Technical University of Budapest, Selye János University of Slovakia, Nyíregyháza College, Kecskemét College, University of Western Hungary, Pannon University of Veszprém, etc.
Library
Sapientia University has its own libraries at each faculty. The libraries have reading rooms and internet access, and continually stock current literature and journals. Library computers are connected to the Electronic Information Service (www.eisz.hu), through which the Hungarian Ministry of Education provides universities with access to electronic sources of information, such as electronic journals (EBSCO). EISZ covers more than half of all scientific journals worldwide (around 20,000 electronic journals).
Student life
In each of the three cities where Sapientia University is located, students have their own organisation, the Students Organization, whose main purpose is to represent student interests. Students are invited to decide on all matters of university management. Responsibilities also include the organisation of various events (first-year camp and dance, play evenings, basketball and football matches, film and dance clubs, workshops, theatre circle, young poets' evening, student scientific conferences, etc.).
The Students Organization operates an information desk where students can ask for advice on various university matters, and get details about scholarships, training courses, employment.
The Students Organization is funded by the University, but, having legal autonomy, it can also access various independent funds.
