Description of the study programme

The Cinematography, Photography, Media programme welcomes young people who are interested in films, enjoy taking photographs and have already tried filmmaking, or feel that they would be happy to make films. If you are one of them and choose this programme, you will become familiar with the basics of cinematography, learn how to operate a camera, how to turn your ideas into a finished screenplay, how to direct a film and how to carry out cinematographic work.

After the general foundational training in the first year, the list of courses is organized according to three specialization tracks:

  1. film and television directing;
  2. film and television image/cinematography;
  3. audiovisual communication (screenwriting and advertising copywriting, animation and photography).

In all three tracks, students acquire the foundations of the professions corresponding to these specializations through numerous interesting and creative assignments. They have the opportunity to take part in individual and group activities, and to present and test their own works in various competitions and student film festivals.

From the first year onward, theoretical and practical training run in parallel. Through the theoretical courses, students become familiar with the history of film, the language of cinema and its artistic possibilities. They may also study advertising, the legal regulations of film production, ways of managing films and other topics that enrich their general knowledge.

During the practical training, as students progress through their years of study, increasing emphasis is placed on workshop practice and individually tailored assignments. Through these, students become familiar with filmmaking techniques, from classical methods to digital image editing. They gain insight into the world of photography, which forms the basis of filmmaking, experiment with editing and montage techniques, and later take on more complex assignments such as making their own short films or even editing, organizing and presenting a full-length live television programme.

Those interested may study animation or documentary filmmaking in greater detail, explore literary adaptations, write film reviews and work on scripts for films and advertisements. Seminars include discussions of important and interesting works of world cinema.

As part of the professional practice at the end of the academic year, an intensive creative camp is organized under the guidance of specialist teachers. During this period of teamwork, everyone can find the task that best suits their own talent.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Cluj had a productive film industry that launched the careers of world-famous filmmakers such as KORDA Sándor / Sir Alexander Korda and KERTÉSZ Mihály / Michael Curtiz. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the Cinematography, Photography, Media programme once again offers the opportunity to discover and support talents for whom the world of film and television represents an exciting and attractive challenge.
