ADMISSION CALENDAR

About Our Program:

  • We teach in Hungarian and Romanian.
  • We graduate students with a Romanian-language understanding of Romanian law that makes them competitive in the job market.
  • We guarantee our ten highest-placing students free housing in our Luridicum dormitory.
  • Our program stresses practical experience, legal action simulations, academic programs, and professional excursions.
  • We offer special preparatory courses for postgraduate judge, prosecutor, and defence attorney exams.

Our Goal:

The goal of the law program is to give our students modern, practical instruction in the field of law. Our graduates, helped by their theoretical and practical knowledge of the actions of law, understand and can operate in the Romanian legal system and the fundamental legal institutions of the country.

Our methodology differentiates from other law programs in two ways. Firstly, our program is bilingual: courses are taught in Romanian and Hungarian. Civic, criminal, and procedural law are taught in Romanian, while other programs are taught in Hungarian. Knowledge and mastery of Romanian law terminology is indispensable for students hoping to be successful in law, while knowledge of the technical Hungarian vocabulary used in law gives students the opportunity to practise law with a high level of proficiency in two official EU languages.

Secondly, our program ties together the theoretical with the practical, the fundamentals of Romanian and European civil law, bringing our courses in line with current, Western European university pedagogy. We give students plenty of practice performing administrative and judicial roles to deepen their understanding and develop skills essential to future careers, and, through the educational and research opportunities Sapientia provides, we continue Cluj’s tradition of excellence in the field of law.

Main Subjects:

The undergraduate law program lasts four years, or eight semesters. The program’s subject matter can be divided into four main groups: general prerequisites, public law, criminal law, and civil law. Besides law prerequisites, students also study social sciences and must take foreign language courses. Outside of their required courses, students select one of three study paths: Romanian and European Economic Law, Romanian and European Civil Law, or Fundamental, Human, and Minority Rights. The development and acquisition of relevant skills, such as the settling of legal cases and the convincing use of rhetoric, constitute an integral part of our law program. Our qualified teaching staff, composed of both Romanians and foreign nationals, ensure our high educational standards are kept, and the small class sizes––there are about forty students per year––allow students to form close, educational relationships with their instructors. The wide array of technical law literature our library keeps in Romanian, Hungarian, and other languages is a valuable resource which serves as our instruction’s intellectual backdrop, and it is always growing. There are also numerous Romanian and international academic journals available, and students have access to the Romanian laws now in effect via our online Romanian law lexicon. Thanks to our many international contacts, students can participate in international conferences and contests.

Employment Opportunities:

With the education we offer, and upon completion of the appropriate testing, our students become judges, prosecutors, attorneys, notaries, and law professors. Our program aims to prepare each of our graduates to successfully pass entrance exams for the National Magistrate’s Institute in order to become judges or prosecutors, or so that they can take and pass the bar examination.
